LITHUANIA - LIETUVA - VILNIUS

Hello Friends!
Welcome to VILNIUS, the capital of the Republic of Lithuania and The European Capital of Culture 2009!

"Very pleasant and very beautiful, that’s what comes to ones mind when talking about Vilnius"!

This post will be a "small trip" for this stunning city, which is, currently, one of the most visited cities in Eastern Europe...

These beautiful photos, published here, of the site www.vilnius-tourism.lt, were kindly provided by Daubarienė Vilma, Chief Project Manager, whom I thank immensely.
My thanks to all the staff of www.vilnius-tourism.lt

The Old Town, historical centre of Vilnius, is the most valuable historic and cultural heritage of the Eastern Europe. There are about 1.5 thousand buildings which were built in different centuries. Vilnius is often called a baroque city, but your architectural heritage presents buildings of gothic style, renaissance and many others.

This is the place where the history of Vilnius begins: the Vilnius Cathedral Square.

The Vilnius Cathedral was opened to the public in 1387!

This temple is much visited by the Lithuanian people.

You need to know it...

The first mention of Lithuania in historical annals was in 1009. In 2009 it will be the 1000th anniversary!

For this occasion Vilnius has been proclaimed European capital of culture. The city has been preparing for the commemoration of this date for several years.

Below, nice view from St.Bernardino Church!

The first Lithuanian who came to Brazil was Andrius Visteliauskas, in the second half of the XIX century, in the city of Ijuí, in the State of Rio Grande doSul.

In São Paulo, the neighborhood of Vila Zelina is the nucleus of a community of descendants of Lithuanians, who have settled around 1926 where, later, built the Church of São José.

Currently, the Brazilian population of Lithuanian origin is about 200 thousand people.
